Competitive Season Comes to a Close
(Winnipeg, MB Friday, September 15th / 17) – The provincial and national competitive schedules have come to a close with a number of highlights in August and early September.
The Men’s Rural Championship (Junior, Amateur & Senior) took place August 12th & 13th at the Portage Golf Club. Wesley Hoydalo of the Selkirk G&CC shot a two-round total of 138 (70 & 68) to win both the Junior & Amateur Championships. Keith Fawcett of the Clear Lake GC repeated as the Senior Division Champion with a two-day total of 155 (76 & 79).
For the first time since 2003, a Women’s Rural Championship took place with Mikyla Albert of the Golf Manitoba Public Player winning with a 36-hole total of 168 (81 & 87).
The Bantam Championship for golfers 14 and under took place at the Tuxedo Golf Club in Winnipeg August 16th & 17th. Pine Ridge Golf Club’s Noah Fiks shot a final round one over 71 to win with a two-day total of 146 (75 & 71).
Five Interclub events also took place in August and early September. The Interclubs are competitive events between clubs with teams of four players competing. The scoring is counted as the best three of four scores for the team total. The following were the winners of the various events:
Women’s Interclub A (Handicap Factor of 24.0 & Lower) – August 22nd at Carman Golf & Curling Club
- Net Division Winners – Pine Ridge GC (Terri Dueck, Alice Muir, Carrie Nemeth & Maria Prymak-Irvine)
- Gross Division Winners – Southwood G&CC (Pat MacKichan, Fran Povoledo, Heather Shayna & Karen Sparrow)
- Low Individual – Fran Povolado (Southwood G&CC)
Men’s Provincial Interclub (Amateur) – August 28th at Pinawa Golf & Country Club
- City Division Winners – Pine Ridge GC (Riley Hall, Tyler Hall, Ryan Terdik & Blair Wizniak)
- Rural Division Winners – Steinbach Fly-In GC (Ike Bueckert, Riley Desautels, Bailey Funk & Adam Guenther)
- Low Individual – Ryan Terdik (Pine Ridge GC)

- Net Division Winners – Glendale G&CC (Carole Jeffries, Bettie Johnston, Elaine Shinfield & Shaaron Weinstein)
- Gross Division Winners – Larters at St Andrews G&CC (Rachelle Berard, Colleen Dalton, Leslie King & Rina Laclaire
- Low Individuals – Marcie Friesen (Portage GC) & Judie Roberts (Elmhurst G&CC)
Junior Interclub – August 31st at Maplewood Golf Club
- Winners – Niakwa CC (Thomas Coldwell, Nicholas Fernandes & Sylvain Ruest)
- Low Individual – Marco Trstenjak (Elmhurst G&CC)
Men’s Senior Interclub – September 6th at Steinbach Fly-In Golf Club
- City Division Winners – Rossmere Country Club (Bob Baldwinson, Rick Klimczakr, Russel Slobodian & Allan Wheeler)
- Rural Division Winners – Carman Golf & Curling Club (Wayne Giesbrecht, Bill North, Bruce North & Lionel Walz)
- Low Individual – Russel Slobodian (Rossmere CC)
On the national scene, at the Canadian Junior Women’s Championship the Manitoba Team of Camryn Roadley (Southwood), Bobbi Uhl (Shilo) and Kate Gregoire (Quarry Oaks) finished in 5th place. Individually, Roadley finished tied for 37th, Uhl and Gregoire missed the cut. Mikyla Albert (MC) was the only other Manitoban competing in the national championship.
At the Canadian Junior Boys Championship, Team Manitoba finished in 7th place. Individually, team members Wesley Hoydalo (Selkirk) finished 14th and Ryan McMillan (Elmhurst) and Anthony Leicht (St Charles) both missed the cut. Also competing in the Canadian Junior Boys Championship were Sylvain Ruest (Niakwa), Sam Diamond (St Charles) and Jacob Armstrong (St Boniface) who all missed the cut.
Manitoba finished 2nd in the Willingdon Cup team competition at the Canadian Men’s Amateur. Team members Travis Fredborg (Pine Ridge), Devon Schade (Elmhurst) and Eric Johnson (Breezy Bend) all missed the cut. Also competing in the event but missed the cut were Justin McDonald, Steve Young, Josh Neufeld, Tyler Doyle, Anthony Leicht & Tyler Rolfe.
The Team of Todd Fanning (Niakwa), Justin McDonald (Breezy Bend) and Mike Tibbs (Breezy Bend) finished 4th at the Canadian Men’s Mid-Amateur. Individually, Todd Fanning won the Mid-Amateur and Mid-Masters titles. This is Manitoba’s first individual national championship win since Garth Collings won the Canadian Mid-Amateur in 2003. Congratulations Todd! Justin McDonald also had a great showing finishing tied for fifth. Mike Tibbs finished 71st. Manitoba was very well represented at the National Mid-Amateur by with a record eleven players making the cut; Garth Collings (T23rd), Chad Facey (T30th), Allan McDonald (T35th), Jay Doyle (T47th), Eric Johnson (T49th), Jesse Skelton (T59th), Ben Bandura (69th) and Jordy Lutz (70th). Also participating in the event were Wade Wetelainen (MC), Cameron Duncan (MC), Tyson Ehnes (MC), Kenny Keeler (MC), Brett Janz (MC) and Jonathan Mathews (MC).
Team Manitoba finished 6th at the Canadian Women’s Senior Championship. Provincial Champion Rhonda Orr (Southwood) finished tied for 13h with teammates Kim Ross (St Charles) finishing T64th and Matty Leung (Southwood) missing the cut. Golf Manitoba was also represented by Gail Kennedy (T37th), Karen Sarimaaki (T41st), Brenda Cleverley (MC), Susan Wright-Cassan (MC) and Karen Yamada (MC). Bri-ann Tokariwski and Jill Hardy competed in the Mid-Amateur Championship which was run in conjunction with the Senior Championship. Tokariwski finished 4th and Hardy finished 6th.
Manitoba had a strong finish at the final national championship of the season with the provincial team finishing tied for third at the Canadian Men’s Senior. Individually, Garth Collings (Breezy Bend) finished tied for 18th, Mike Walker (St. Boniface) finished tied for 56th and Brett Clague (St. Boniface) missed the cut. Other Manitobans competing were Brian Katchnoski and Barry Minish who also missed the cut.
